Ransomware Attacks Target Water Utilities

Two water companies, Veolia North America and Southern Water, recently experienced ransomware attacks. Veolia's Municipal Water division experienced disruptions in its bill payment systems, leading the company to collaborate with law enforcement and third-party forensic experts to assess the extent of the attack's impact on its operations and systems. In the case of Southern Water, the ransomware attack was carried out by the Black Basta gang. The company had previously detected suspicious activity, prompting an investigation led by independent cybersecurity specialists. Notably, both companies maintained operational continuity in their ICS and OT systems without experiencing disruptions.

Tom Marsland, Cloud Range VP of Technology, was recently quoted in two articles about these attacks. “…this goes to emphasize the need to be a hard target. Securing your assets includes your normal corporate assets... Companies providing OT services will be a higher target, and every networked machine provides a possible avenue for intrusion.”
