CLOUD RANGE NAMED ONE OF THE TOP 10 HOT CYBER RANGE COMPANIES TO WATCH IN 2020

Bridging the cybersecurity skills gap with virtual hands-on experience

A cyber range is designed to mimic real-world scenarios that can be used to detect and react to simulated cyberattacks, and to enable practitioners to test new technologies to enhance their cybersecurity platforms.

The biggest problem that CISOs (chief information security officers) are trying to solve with cyber ranges is the skills shortage, according to Debbie Gordon, founder and CEO at Cloud Range.

Gordon is spot on because that’s exactly what the editors at Cybercrime Magazine are hearing from Fortune 500 and Global 2000 CISOs.

Cyber ranges have also become increasingly important to cybersecurity service firms, MSPs, and MSSPs, as well as VARs who are venturing into cyber. In the future, we expect to see high schools and universities adopting cyber ranges to educate students on cybersecurity.

Cybersecurity Ventures predicts there will be 3.5 million unfilled cybersecurity jobs by 2021, up from one million positions in 2014. Many of these are senior-level openings. A big part of the problem our industry faces is a deficit of advanced skills which can only be learned from real-world experience.

A cyber range simulates what an IT or cybersecurity professional would face on the job — and it’s done in a safe environment. This allows a CISO or security leader to immerse their staff into a myriad of experiences having to do with digital forensics, ethical hacking, incident response, mobile security, penetration testing, threat hunting, and much more.

The idea then is to develop and upskill cybersecurity professionals, and cross-train IT workers, from within, in order to fill the most critical positions.

Hot Cyber Range Companies

Who’s who in the cyber range space? Here’s 10 hot companies the editors at Cybercrime Magazine are watching in 2020, and you should too.

  • Accenture, Houston, Texas. The Accenture Security Industrial Control Systems (ICS) Cyber Range enables oil and gas companies to test and stage the responses of industrial process controls against sophisticated attacks in a risk-free setting.

  • Cloud Range, Nashville, Tenn. The world’s most advanced security teams depend on Cloud Range’s customized, secure, cloud-based cyber range training platform to hone their skills. Using real tools from the world’s leading technology manufacturers on a real virtual enterprise network, your team will be prepared to win every time.

  • Cyberbit, Ra’anana, Israel. Cyberbit’s cyber range ensures your team has the necessary experience to effectively mitigate an attack, and dramatically improves your team’s performance, by immersing them in a hyper-realistic cyberattack simulation inside a virtual SOC, before the real attack occurs.

  • Fifth Domain, Canberra. Australia. Custom-built replicas of enterprise networks so staff can train in their own environment, using their own tools and technology. The ranges can be hosted in the cloud or on premises depending on an organization’s requirements.

  • Guardtime, Lausanne, Switzerland. Cybersecurity solutions based on in-house KSI blockchain technology stack provide a range of services related to cyber defense training, exercises and operations, for both military and government clients, addressing tactical, operational and strategic needs.

  • IBM, Cambridge, Mass. The X-Force Command Cyber Tactical Operations Center (C-TOC) provides the industry’s first mobile cyber range and watch floor, with 23 tons of cyber capabilities on wheels, wherever they are needed. Can be configured as an immersive training cyber range, a platform for red teaming and capture-the-flag competitions.

  • RangeForce, Manassas, Va. Scalable cloud-based platform providing hands-on measurable simulation training for cybersecurity and IT operations professionals. Admins and team managers can quickly create teams, assign users to each team, and apply the different classes and modules to each team or user as needed.

  • Raytheon Technologies, Waltham, Mass. The Raytheon Cyber Operations, Development and Evaluation (CODE) Center is a state-of-the-art cyber range used to test existing and future mission-critical systems against cyberattacks. Customers test the resilience of critical technologies — with industry-leading agility, flexibility and scalability.
